We had been experimenting with Persistence of Vision toys for some time, when the idea occurred to one of my colleagues to treat it as a video-game display, making it respond to the child's actions.
We ultimately conceived a game/playset for Hot Wheels, which used a spinning bar of LEDS to create a persistence-of-vision animated display the child could launch cars at.
The team and I collaborated to design the overall play experience. I created the animations, co-designed the mini-games and wrote a simple animation tool in Javascript, while my co-designers built the motorized display and sculpted the playset.
